In 1980s the students of Govt. Ayurveda College Thripunithura, Eranakulam, Kerala  under the leadership of Dr. G Anil kumar from North Paravoor, Dr. J. Radhakrishnan from Ochira, Dr.K.N.Sreerudran from Kodungallur, Dr.P.R.Rajendran from Varappuzha, Dr. Madhukumar from Thodupuzha and Dr. Dineshkumar from Thripunithura  had an attempt to improve the knowledge and awareness of Ayurveda among the Ayurvedists and public in general. The attempt and working   steam made the starting point of this association. All the discussions on the Ayurvedic subjects were well appreciated and promoted by the Ayurvedic community.  Most of the discussions and workshops were extra ordinary with the participation of teachers, practitioners and students of Ayurveda. Most of the classes and seminars were  organized by students themselves. The participants were benefitted a lot with the discussion and classes. These attempts showed a ray of light for the future action plan for the organizers. They organized a session for every Saturday evening with the appreciation and promotion of authorities.  Later on Dr. P. Nandakumar from Eranankulam and Dr. B. Rajeev from Perumbavoor joined to this group.

 

​The same team after the completion of their studies met every last Sunday of a month at Guruvayoor to discuss various aspects of Ayurveda including the Ayurvedic day-to-day practices. The team named the programs as Swadhyaya.


These innovative activities were known to so many experts, eminent personalities and well wishers of Ayurveda like Madhavaji, Eranakulam, Parameswarji Thiruvananthapuram etc. Parameswarji was attracted by these activities and arranged a platform for Ayurvedic doctors at Peramangalam High School, Thrissur on the ongoing program . The participants were boosted by this get together of Ayurvedic doctors and expanded the activity like visiting eminent Ayurvedists like Padmabhushan Vaidyabhushanam K Raghavan Thirumulpad etc. Parameswarji and Thirurmulpad were having the opinion that these discussions should be benefitted to all the Ayurvedic fertenity and they also may be invited for the discussions.

At the same time (1991) the first meeting of the Science Congress organized by the Swadeshi Science Movement was conducted at Thrissur. In this Science congress the participants passed a resolution that the Ayurvedic science should be put forward in the activities of Swadeshi Science movement.


In 1992 Swadeshi Science congress has organized the science congress at Thiruvananthapuram and one session was held exclusively for Ayurveda. In the same meeting in the speech of Padmabhushan Vaidyabhushsnam K Raghavan Thirumulpad had named the Ayurvedic stream of SSM as Vagbhatasarani.


In May 16, 1993, the first official meeting of Vagbhatasarani was held at Madhava Nivas, Kaloor, Eranakulam after the constitution of it on 1992. In the meeting Dr.Sankaran Nair (Late) was elected as the first Chairman. Dr. P.K.Dharmapalan, Professor, Dept. of Kayachikitsa elected as the first convener of Vagbhatasarani. The action plan was also finalized in the same meeting. It was also decided to conduct the meeting in the month of Chingam (1,2,3) every year. It was also decided to conduct discussions with Acharyas and practical demonstration, workshops etc. of Ayurvedic practice. The minimum qualification of the delegates has been fixed as the recognized set up. The first such type of meeting was held at Adwaithasramam, Aluva. The them selected was Basic Principles of Ayurveda and Sanskrit. The experience of the meeting was attracted the attention of many Ayurvedists.


The organizers have decided to conduct these types of meeting in every year at different places. The name of the meeting was suggested by Dr. J. Radhakrishnan, Ochira as Sasthramadhanam. It was also decided to award Vagbhatapuraskaram, for the best paper presented in the Sasthramadhanam. Some of the winners of the Vagbhatapuraskaram are Dr. Sreekrishnan, Dr. V A Prabhakaran, Dr. Raghu, Dr N Sreekanth. In the year 2002 the meeting was organized at Eranakulam along with Dhanvanthari Jayanthi. It was under the direct control of the Swadeshi Science Movement and named it as the First World Ayurveda Congress from Nov 1 to 4. After the First World Ayurveda congress it was decided to conduct Ashtangahrudayasathram focusing mainly on the text for 7 days. It has begun from 2003 onwards. It was also decided to conduct the Sasthramadhanam and Ashtangahrudayasathram in every alternate year.

        From 01.08.2012 onwards Vagbhatasarani has registered as a society. From 19.04.2022 onwards the association is registered as Vagbhatasarani Trust
